I taught 9th grade high school students for two weeks. I taught since 21 January 2019 to 1 February 2019. Before teaching, I certainly first completed a lesson plan related to the topics that I would teach to students. In this exchange, I get the opportunity to teach two topics or for two weeks. For the first week, I taught my own topic, teaching reading with the story of "Driving Miss Daisy" by Alfred Uhry. Whereas the second topic is the topic of my collaboration with my buddy. The second topic is teaching grammar, teaching direct and indirect speech.
Teaching experience in Week 1
My teaching procedures for the first topic is, first, I greet students and ask one of the students to be a prayer leader. Then, I turn on the smart tv, and then play a trailer story titled "The Help" which was released as a movie in America. This video is a warming up that I use to help students to be able to connect the warming up stories with the main stories that have similar topics, about friendship. The story of "The Help" tells of two black housemaids who are friendly and often get bad harsh treatment from their superiors who are mostly white people. Then, there was a woman who realized that these two people should not be treated badly like this. So, this white woman intends to write a book about the life journey of these two black household servants. Over time, these three people became close and they became friends. So they prove that being racist is not allowed.
For the next activity, I invite students to discuss the contents of the video. Then, for the next activity, I provide a vocabulary builder in the form of individual tasks, namely the initial task. So students are given paper that contains incomplete words. To make it easier for them, I also put a definition of each vocabulary so that they can answer it directly.
After being discussed it together, I asked them to collect it in front of the class. I collected it because this is one of the assessment techniques that I used. After that, I gave the general information about the driving of Miss Daisy story. I gave the general information like the year of release, the writer, and the characters in this story. After that, I played a short video, such as a summary of the story video "Driving Miss Daisy." Then, I asked them to sit in 6 groups. One group has 5 people. After they sit in groups, then I ask them to discuss the questions I wrote on the small paper. Here, each group gets different questions. Then, I give them about 10 minutes to discuss in groups.
After they discussed it, I asked one group to present the results of their discussion. Then, I also asked students from other groups to pay attention to the answers from each group, because the questions in this discussion could be questions that appear in a formative test. After all the groups gave their answers, then I reviewed the story of driving Miss Daisy, and gave questions by imagining Miss Daisy as the students’ grandmother. After giving teaching the moral and advice related to this story, then I ask one person to conclude today's lesson or what they get from the story, by concluding it in one sentence. One of the volunteers will be labeled and give extra bonus, because this is part of the informal assessment. After that, I closed the lesson and asked one student to become the prayer leader.
Teaching Experience in Week 2
For the second week, the topic that I teach is direct and indirect speech. On this topic, I asked two students to read a brief conversation between Romeo and Juliet. Which is written on a small paper. Previously, I asked students to listen carefully to the conversation. Then, I processed by asking which one is direct speech and which one is indirect speech.
Then, I present an example sentence, and ask whether this agreement is direct or indirect speech. After students answer it, I do not directly say the correct answer. Here I use discovery learning to help students understand direct and indirect speech. Then, I distribute the written material (handout), which has been distribute for each student, so everyone gets one. Then I asked them to read it and asked them to discuss the topic with a friend next to them. After completed, I gave an example of the sentences of direct and indirect speech on the board. While explaining how to change direct into indirect speech and how to change indirect speech into direct speech, I also asked them to write it on their English notebook. Later, I asked students to sit in groups, which consisted of 6 groups, one group of 5 people. This time, I design games using a mini board. So, each group has a mini board to write their answers. I will give a question and display it via power point on the smart tv. And I will only give them 15 seconds to think about the answer. When I say "stop" then no group can write, and all groups must show their answers they have written on their mini board. After that, the group that get many correct answer is the winner. Then, I gave them homework in their printed books. Finally, I closed the day's lesson and asked one of the students to become the prayer leader.
