Academic Supports Programs & Strategies
Classroom-based strategies
Based on my observation, the teacher usually use the teaching method of students-centered. When the teacher explains in front of the class, the teacher always tries to involve students in the teaching and learning process. Examples of this, teacher giving simple questions to the students related to the topic of the lesson, which then ultimately increases students' curiosity. Not only that, teachers usually also provide learning activities that make students fully involved. When I made a lesson plan, my coordinating teacher asked me to involve students in the learning process by providing various activities, such as individual activities, pair activities and group activities.
After-class strategies
This school provides a wide field that complete with small benches around the field. This field can be used by students for playing, or waiting to their parents to come to pick them up, of course this will be safer. Not only that, the school also provides a library that opens at 7 am and closes at 5pm. In my opinion, the library's operating hours are very efficient because in general students are going home, especially 9th grade, is at 4pm. So, they can take an hour after school to come to the library, whether to read or borrow books. One more thing, in this school also provides computers to be used by students to find online learning resources. These computers are free for students to use during school hours with librarian control. This computer placement is near the librarian, so librarians can still control the web pages opened by students.
Technology-assisted strategies
Even in Philippines the internet connection is not really in a high speed, but students in this school can still use technology for studying. This is a computer to students, that placed in the library. I also recognize, if there is a free Wifi in the library, but it cannot use for students. Students can connect to the Wifi if they are using computers that are available in the library itself.
School-based strategies
The thing that I realized in one of the learning processes in this school is project-based. This can be seen in the activities designed by my cooperating teacher. In this process, she asked students to display/perform a drama by William Shakespeare. In Philippines, students will receive report/ result of their studying every 3 months, so in every three months they will have a final exam. For this reason, the project for the January-March period is to show drama / do a performance, for class 9 in English subject. In my opinion, this project-based program is very important to build a good team work among the students. Then, this project-based will also reduce the level of cheating in the test, because this is a performance test, so they cannot cheat each other. And students can also learn while playing.
